A Canadian financial technology company that operates a payments platform for freelance workers has moved its U.S. headquarters to North Austin with plans to hire several hundred local employees.

Vancouver-based Hyperwallet Systems Inc. opened its office in The Domain this week about 10 workers. Its previous U.S. headquarters was in San Francisco but CEO Brent Warrington told Austin Business Journal Tuesday that he and several executives are based in Austin as the company capitalizes on the growing popularity of the collaborative economy and contract workers.

"We continue to see the business accelerate," he said. "We believe we have the opportunity to see it grow in the triple digits this year."

The Austin office will include workers involved in all aspects of the business such as development and marketing, Warrington said.

Hyperwallet, which was founded in 2000, employs nearly 300 workers, said Warrington, who replaced founding CEO Lisa Shields in mid-2015. The company operates in 170 countries and 150 currencies, he said.

Several Central Texas companies already operate in the financial technology, or fintech, sector. They include Liveoak Technologies Inc., Mozido Inc., Self Lender Inc. and Malauzai Software Inc.

Hyperwallet, in fact, is Warrington's third Austin fintech company. He was previously the CEO of SecureNet Payment Systems Inc., an Austin company bought by Worldpay AP Ltd. in 2014. Before that, he was the CEO of FundsXpress Inc., another Austin company acquired by New York-based First Data Corp. in 2007.
